BBIS Green Team: Students Leading Sustainability Efforts Across our School

BBIS is proud to announce that we have regained the prestigious title of 'Internationale Nachhaltigkeitsschule - Umweltschule in Europa' for the 2024-2025 school year. This recognition, awarded by the renowned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Umwelterziehung (German Society for Environmental Education), acknowledges our ongoing commitment to environmental education and our positive impact on the world.

At the heart of our sustainability efforts is the Green Team, a dedicated group of students and staff who meet weekly to lead initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and sustainability across our school community. Together, they plan, organise, and drive projects that contribute to building a sustainable future for everyone.

This school year, the Green Team is focusing on energy conservation and biodiversity, with key initiatives including:

  • Creating trash art from recyclable materials and making seed bombs during the Primary School Culture Rooms
  • Distributing the hand-made seed bombs throughout the campus in spring to encourage biodiversity
  • Organising a Lights Out Day for the entire school
  • Building compost bins to be used for our school gardens
  • Working with the Facilities team to offer a tour of our school’s energy system to the BBIS community
  • Planting trees across our campus
  • Presenting educational talks on energy saving and biodiversity to the wider community
  • Raising awareness through the Green Team’s social media account
  • Hosting information booths on various environmental topics

To maintain our recognition as a 'Internationale Nachhaltigkeitsschule - Umweltschule in Europa', the Green Team’s activities are carefully documented and reviewed. In addition to the weekly meetings, the Eco-Schools Committee, which includes parents, students, and staff, convenes every semester to support the Green Team’s efforts and reinforce our sustainable commitment.

Being part of the Green Team provides students with valuable leadership experience. They have the opportunity to propose their own ideas, collaborate with others, and drive sustainability initiatives within the school. It is also a chance to build connections, take ownership of projects, and foster creativity.

The Green Team is committed to expanding its role within our school community, working to achieve even greater recognition and inspire more sustainability efforts throughout BBIS.
